Garage Door Opener Not Working? Decode the Symptom.

Openers don't just quit. They quit in a specific way: dead silent, clicking once, humming without moving, or working every third Tuesday. A garage door opener that's not working is telling you exactly what's wrong.

Match the symptom. Totally dead means power, GFCI, or breaker. Remote dead but wall button fine means battery or lock mode. A single click then nothing means the starting capacitor. A hum with no movement means a stripped drive gear or a broken spring. Running motor with a still door means a pulled release cord. Opens but won't close with a flashing light means safety sensors. Works some days and not others means a dying logic board or LED bulb interference. Half of these are two-minute homeowner fixes. The rest are honest repairs. Totally dead, no lights.

No light, no hum, no click, nothing. That's a power problem, not an opener problem, and it's the best news on this page. Check the ceiling outlet first: plug a lamp into it. Dead outlet? Garage outlets in Georgia homes usually ride a GFCI circuit, so find the GFCI (it may be across the garage, in a bathroom, or outside) and hit reset. Then check the breaker panel. Storm season fills my schedule with "dead" openers that were one tripped GFCI.

Remote dead, wall button works.

If the wall button runs the door and the clicker doesn't, the opener is fine. Swap the remote's coin-cell battery first; short range before it died completely was your warning. Still nothing? Check the wall console for a lock button. Kids press it, elbows press it, and when it's on, every remote and keypad goes dead on purpose. Hold it a few seconds to unlock. Wall button dead too, but the light is on.

Power's there, brains aren't listening. The wall button is just a switch on two thin wires, and those wires get nicked by nails, chewed by mice, and loosened by time. Check the connections at the button and at the back of the motor head. Buttons also physically stick and die. If the wiring and button check out and the opener still ignores you, the logic board is the likely culprit, and that's a bench diagnosis for a tech.

Clicks once, then nothing.

That single click is the relay firing and the motor asking for its starting jolt. When nothing follows, the starting capacitor is almost always dead. Georgia heat is murder on capacitors; a garage ceiling in July is an oven, and capacitors are the first component to cook. The good news: on a unit that isn't ancient, a capacitor is a quick, inexpensive swap for a tech. Don't open the motor head yourself. Capacitors hold a charge even unplugged.

Hums but nothing moves.

The motor is running and something downstream let go. Check the spring first: look above the door for a clean gap in the torsion coil. A broken spring makes the door too heavy, and the opener hums, strains, and gives up. If the spring is whole, the classic cause is a stripped main drive gear, the white plastic gear inside older chain-drive units. You'll sometimes find white shavings on the motor housing like plastic snow. Springs are spring repair. Gears are a gear kit, and that's opener surgery.

Runs but the door doesn't move.

Motor sounds normal, trolley slides down the rail, door sits there. Somebody pulled the red release cord, usually during a power outage, and the trolley is disengaged from the door. With the door fully DOWN, pull the cord toward the door to reset the latch, then run the opener until the trolley clicks back in. If the door is stuck OPEN, leave that cord alone. The door can free-fall. That one's a phone call.

Opens but won't close, light flashing.

That flashing light is the opener telling on its safety sensors. The two little eyes near the floor are blocked, knocked out of line, or unplugged, and the opener refuses to close blind. That's a feature, not a failure. Clear the beam, aim the eyes at each other until both lights glow steady, and check the wires. I wrote a whole walkthrough on this one: garage door won't close. Works some days, not others.

The most annoying symptom on the list, and usually one of two culprits. A dying logic board fails intermittently before it fails completely, especially in summer heat. Or something in the garage is shouting over your remote's frequency, and the number one offender is real: certain LED bulbs, including the one screwed into the opener itself, emit interference that jams remotes. Swap the opener bulb for one rated for garage door openers and see if the gremlins leave. If they stay, the board is dying. Replace it before it strands you.

The part that burns me up

The phone-call diagnosis.

A homeowner calls a big outfit, describes a door that won't budge, and before anyone has seen the unit, the voice on the phone declares “sounds like the motor's shot” and starts quoting whole new openers. Nobody looked. Nobody listened to it click. I've followed behind those calls and found sensors knocked half an inch out of line, a 30-second alignment, and capacitors that swap out in minutes. You cannot diagnose a motor through a telephone.

Look, here's the thing. The symptom tells you where to look, but the unit tells you what's true. Nobody should buy a new opener because of a guess.

Repair it or replace it?

The honest math on old openers, no sales pitch.

Here's the line I use in driveways. If the failed part is a gear kit, a capacitor, a sensor, or a trolley, and the unit is on the younger side, repair it. Those are routine fixes and the opener has years left. But if the motor or the logic board is gone on a unit past 12 to 15 years, resuscitating it usually isn't the smart play. A new opener brings battery backup for outages, modern safety sensors, and a motor with a full life ahead of it, and you skip the next three service calls on the old one. Belt versus chain? Why is my garage door opener clicking but not opening?
A single click and then silence is the classic sound of a dead starting capacitor. The relay fires, the motor asks for its jolt of starting power, and nothing comes. Georgia attic heat cooks capacitors early, so it's one of the most common opener repairs we do. The other suspect is a broken torsion spring: the opener senses a door that suddenly weighs 150 pounds and gives up. Look at the spring above the door first. A clean gap in the coil means it's a spring job, not an opener job.
How long do garage door openers last?
A typical opener runs 12 to 15 years. Units that get an annual tune-up, a lubricated rail, a tested safety reverse, and a door with healthy springs regularly go longer, because a balanced door is easy on the motor. An opener dragging an unbalanced door ages in dog years. If yours is past that window and acting up, read the repair-or-replace section above before sinking money into it.
Is it worth repairing an old garage door opener?
Depends on what failed and how old the unit is. A gear kit, capacitor, sensor, or trolley on a unit under 10 or 12 years old is an easy yes: repair it. A dead motor or logic board on a unit past 12 to 15 years is usually a no, because you'd be putting the most expensive parts into a machine with none of the modern safety and convenience features. Why did my garage door opener stop working after a storm?
Two reasons, and both are Georgia summer specials. First, the surge: lightning doesn't have to hit your house to fry an opener's logic board, a spike down the line is plenty. Second, the trip: garage outlets usually ride a GFCI circuit, and storms trip them constantly. Hit the reset button on the GFCI outlet and check the breaker panel before you assume the worst. If the outlet is live and the opener is still dead, the board likely took the hit, and that's a service call.
Why does my remote work but my keypad doesn't?
Start with the battery. Keypads live outside in the weather and their batteries die faster than remote batteries. If a fresh battery doesn't wake it, reprogram the keypad to the opener; the steps are in the manual, or call and we'll walk you through it free. Keypads also wear out mechanically. Ten years of the same four digits in rain and heat will kill the buttons themselves, and a replacement keypad is a cheap, quick fix.
